"Remember The Maine", February 15th (Suggested Book and Poster).

I highly recommend "The Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine" by Samuel Willard Crompton. The book is an excellent narrative of the event's leading up to the sinking of the ship and the long term consequences (the War, ect.). There is also a poster available of the U.S.S. Maine taken after it was sunk in Havana Harbor, for anyone interested in having a copy of that photograph, for mounting or as a collector's item, or to donate to a local school (Social Studies / History Class). // "Remember The Maine" and the men who gave their lives and honor them by remembering their sacrifices, pass down the history of these brave men, even if all you can do is purchase a poster to donate to a local school, let us keep their memories alive, if we as Son's of Spanish American War Veteran's don't > Who Will ??

"Remember The Maine", February 15th

February 15th, 1898 was the day the U.S.S. Maine sank in Havana harbor. We ask all our member's and friend's to remember all the brave men who lost their lives on that day.

The New U.S.S. New York, Sets Sail, but the name has part of it's root's, in The Spanish American War.

The U.S.S New York set sail from Avondale, Louisiana to New York, this week. She was built using steel recovered from The World Trade Center and will be commissioned, on November 7th, at the Intrepid Museum Pier. It will be home ported at Norfolk, Virginia.
There have been a total of 6 U.S.S New York's, with one (the 4th) which served in the Spanish American War. The Ship was an armoured cruiser and served as Rear Admiral William T. Sampson's  flagship, during the Battle of Santiago, Cuba and prior to that had served, at the bombardment of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on May 12th, 1898. It was finally decommissioned in 1933, in the Philippines and was scuttled, in December 1941, to prevent her capture, by the Japanese.

American Legion Post # 1, Havana, Cuba

The American Legion Post #1, in Havana, Cuba was founded initially, by many Spanish American War Veteran's. The Post dedicated a Mausoleum, in Colon Cemetery, in Havana, Cuba, in 1926. This Mausoleum still stands, in Havana and holds the remain's of many Spanish American War Veteran's, World War One Veteran's, Confederate Veteran's and Union Veteran's. The last Commander of The American Legion Post, was Howard Anderson (age 41 and a World War Two Veteran), who was brutally tortured and finally excecuted, by the Castro Regime, on April 19th, 1961, after a "show trial". The old American Legion Mausoleum, is still in decent condition, even after 50 years, of neglect. It was recently videotaped, by a Canadian tourist and one can still clearly see the United Confederate Veteran's, United Spanish American War Veteran's and The Grand Army of The Republic emblem's, on the Mausoleum wall's. It is my hope to somehow get the name's, rank's, unit's, of all Veteran's buried there, I will be working on this project and will keep you informed. /// There are many Spanish American War Veteran's, Boxer Rebellion and Philippine's Insurrection Veteran's buried in many foreign nation's, if any reader's of this Blog overseas, know of any Veteran's, buried, in their Country, please send me an Email and I will add them to our Camp's historical record's.
